  4. The major applications of information systems to end user activities and business operations and management.
  5. How to meet the major challenges of managing information system resources and activities

Conceptual Categories of Information systems :

  1. Operations Information systems
  2. Transaction processing systems
  3. Process control systems
  4. Automated office systems
  5. Information reporting systems
  6. Decision Support systems
  7. Executive Information Systems
  8. End user Computing systems
  9. Expert systems
  10. Strategic Information Systems
  11. Business Function Information Systems
In real world these conceptual classifications are typically combined into integrated information systems which provide information and decision support for managers and also perform traditional data processing activities.

Management Information Systems provide information needed for effective management decision making. This category includes information reporting systems, which provide prespecified information to managers on demand, according to a schedule or on a exception basis. Decision support systems use decision models and specialized databases to provide interactive ad hoc support for specific decisions faced by managers. Executive information systems are MIS systems tailored to the strategic information needs of top management. Expert systems use a knowledge base about a complex application area  and an inference engine program to act as an expert consultant to users. End user computing systems support the direct, hands on use of computers by end users for operational and managerial applications.

Information Systems can play three strategic roles in business organizations. they can help a business improve operational efficiency, promote organizational innovation or build strategic information resources, there by giving it a competitive advantage in its relationships with customers, suppliers, competitors, new entrants and producers of substitute products. Thus , a firm can use information systems to lower costs, improve productivity, develop new products, services , and processes, lock in customers and suppliers and build a strategic information base .
